Tony's bio:

I am a Logistics and Supply Chain Consultant with over 30 years’ experience in manufacturing and logistics operations. I specialise in Warehouse Design and Optimisation.

In addition to consulting, for the last 2 years I have been working part time at Warwick University as a guest lecturer. My subject is the Warehouse Design Process, and the lectures form part of the MSc in Supply Chain & Logistics Management. In 2021 my duties were extended to include mentoring students with their dissertation. The university work is highly rewarding and very enjoyable.
I started my early career training to become an Industrial Engineer – I studied at night school to gain the Institute of Management Services Certificate and Diploma. I am fully trained and qualified as both a Work Study Engineer and a practitioner of the MOST system.

Tony Hughes Guest Lecturer at Warwick University MSc Course
My career took a slight deviation when I started working for Peugeot Motor Company, where I worked in manufacturing and was responsible for Line Feeding and Logistics operations. At the same time, my studies continued, and I completed the Institute of Logistics Diploma. Following this I transferred within Peugeot to the Spare Parts warehousing operation, during which time I completed the MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain management.
After 9 years at Peugeot, I then joined the world of 3rd party logistics. I have worked with Ryder, Exel / DHL, Norbert Dentressangle (XPO), Ceva, and TNT. My 3rd party career has taken me all over the world and has been very enjoyable, making some great friends along the way. I have worked mostly in warehouse operations solution design, supporting business development tenders, and supporting in house operations. I have worked across all sectors and covered all types of storage media and handling equipment, both manual and automated. I have also worked on numerous WMS specification and implementation projects.

I was self-employed in 2013 for a year during which time I worked as an associate for a consulting company and directly for an Automation Systems Integrator, who I later joined as a full-time employee. I worked on projects that included Pick and Put to Light systems, Conveyors and Sorters, AGV's and AMR's, Shuttle Systems and Automated Packing Systems. I also completed the technical design training course in Norway with Autostore.

Following on from this I worked for Cirrus Logistics developers of the CLASS Warehouse Simulation Software. My role was divided between managing consultancy projects and delivering training courses to users across the world.

I have been self-employed since January 2020. During this time my workload has been divided between working on projects for my private clients and working as an associate with other Consulting companies.

Outside Of Work

Outside of work – I love cycling – started about 6 years ago after hanging up my football boots. I generally average 5,000 miles a year.

Through my cycling I support various charities, especially Marie Curie and Macmillan Cancer charities.

For my sins, I am a Birmingham City fan. That's not easy!

I have the experience to work on projects of any size and work alongside trusted partners to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
I am based centrally in Northamptonshire and work with clients throughout the UK but also globally. With over 30 year's experience in manufacturing and logistics operations and working with key partners in the sector we can deliver a project of any size.
