Tony Hughes, Logistics Consultant and Part Time University Lecturer
Hello. I’m Tony Hughes or TH. I’m a logistics and supply chain consultant and part time university lecturer. I am based in Northamptonshire and work with clients throughout the UK and around the world. With over 30 years of experience in manufacturing and logistics operations and having worked with most of the largest 3PLs I am very experienced and well qualified to undertake any warehouse related project.
Early days
I started my career training to become an Industrial Engineer. I am a fully qualified Work Study Engineer and practitioner of the Maynard operation sequence technique (MOST) predetermined motion time system.
Next I joined Peugeot Motor Company where I worked for almost 9 years in manufacturing, line feeding and logistics operations. Whilst at Peugeot I completed the Institute of Logistics Diploma.
During the last 4 years at Peugeot, I worked at the Peugeot Spare Parts warehousing operation where I completed the MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
3rd Party Logistics Providers
In 1998 I joined the world of third-party logistics, working for
Ryder,
Exel/DHL,
Norbert Dentressangle (XPO),
Ceva,
TNT.
This part of my career was very enjoyable, taking me all over the world and making some great friends along the way. I worked mostly in warehouse operations solution design, supporting business development tenders and managing in-house operations.

MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management
I have worked across all sectors and covered all types of storage media and materials handling equipment, both manual and automated. I have also worked on numerous warehouse management system (WMS) specification and implementation projects.
The path to consultancy
Logistex – Automated Systems Integrator
I joined Logistex in 2014 where I worked on projects that included Pick and Put to Light systems, conveyors and sorters, shuttle systems and automated packing systems. I also completed the technical design training course with Autostore in Norway.
Class : Cirrus : Korber Supply Chain
In 2016 I moved to Cirrus Logistics (now Körber), developers of the CLASS warehouse simulation software, where I used the simulation software to support consultancy projects. I also delivered the 3-day core principles training courses to over 70 users around the world.
Lecturer at the University of Warwick – MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management
I also work part time at Warwick University as a lecturer since Jan 2021. My specilist lecture subject is the Warehouse Design process. In addition to the lectures, I mark papers and lead classroom sessions. I also mentor students with their dissertation which is a 6-month process. I really enjoy my work at the university, it’s a real pleasure to work with the students.
Today
I have been an independent consultant since January 2020, dividing my time between projects for my private clients and working as an associate with other consulting companies:
3rd Party Logistics Providers
Private contracts – typically shorter engagements – project specific
Other consulting companies working as an associate
Working with Automation Integrators
I have the expertise and experience to work individually and alongside trusted partners on projects of any size and to make sure they are delivered on time and within budget.

My subject is the Warehouse Design Process, and the lectures form part of the MSc in Supply Chain & Logistics Management. I also mentor students with their dissertations.
I love cycling which I started about eight years ago after hanging up my football boots. I generally average 5,000 miles a year, in part to raise funds in support of the Marie Curie and Macmillan Cancer Support charities.
For my sins, I am a Birmingham City fan. That's not easy!
